Second Day at the Gym

Well, it was the 2nd day for the gym. Arriving at about 8:30 pm, I noticed that there were quite a lot of people since everybody including me had just come back from the Over-Time (OT) work which is called "야근" in Korean or probably it is the best time for coming to the gym as they work in day time.

Warming up... This time I spent longer time, got to know and tried various equipment for gaining a bit of muscle though I had no ideas at all of how to use them. As usual, warming up is very essential for workout; hence, I headed straight to the "treadmill" -- walking slowly at speed 5x for the first 5 minutes and then ran at faster speed 9x for another 15 minutes. I was sweating a lot after this but moved on to the "exercise bike" for another 15 minutes at average speed of 12x. That was enough for the warming up. So, it was time for "WORKOUT". Yeah!!!

Workout... My first equipment for workout was a kind of bench. I don't know how to call this but I got on this for doing my abdomen workout (A dream of getting six packs! hehe... :P) for a few minutes. Then, moved on to do the Chest and Shoulder workout, and thus I got on to the "Body-Solid Pec Machine". Then, moved back to the Leg Press Machine, called the "Leg Ext/Leg Curl Machine". In fact, I tried out several others as well but to name those equipment is a real headache. That was pretty much about it for today. And tomorrow, I'm going to just run on the "treadmill" and ride the "exercise bike" because I need to keep some times for my body to recover. ;)

Can't believe it's been almost one year to not having posted anything on my personal blog. As said, this is my personal life's blog; say pye pye to those technical and technology stuffs. But wait!!! New blog will be launched soon just for technology and my knowledge about them. Honestly, now I'm still learning the "HTML5 and CSS3" and of course the cute man "jquery". I don't have much time but will try my best because I think it's also good for me. So, hope to launch a nicer blog than this one soon. Anyway, the problem is "I'm so poor at web things". Ahhhh...

Busy busy... Student's life is like that. The higher education, the busier and harder life we have. People might ask "What and Why" question but it's really true, especially if you're in a situation like mine. From second semester, I started my part-time job (Korean call it "Albar") at the company. Now you see, work and study at the same time. Just imagine the time you fully have for doing assignments, researches and projects at school/lab so far are now needed to be carefully allocated since I need time for the job (Well, two days per week; not much! I also earn the money though). That had been my busy life. Not enough, thing's getting serious when I was in the last semester. The time for "Master Thesis". I failed to accomplish several topics. That was so sad and bad too coz I'd spent blood and time for those. Then, I had to abandon them and choose the new one. hmm... What a life! However, any deed got paid. I felt like I learned a lot from those researches. Now I kept them in my wishlist, so that if in the unforeseeable future I'm able to run my own business, those will be included. :) Really hope so. Ah, where are you now, Ieng? Still dreaming? Wake up man. Oh yes, here I am. I'm back, I'm back. Eventually, I completed my thesis but with just-survive result (at least to my thought :-|). Anyway, now new life started. I enter the company as the full-time and waiting for the graduation ceremony day to come which will be held on February 22, 2012.

New resolutions... Well, new year needs new resolutions! There are many I need to include or change in my life routine. Not to mention now since it's too late at night (12:26 AM, Korean time). I gotta get up early in the morning to go to work. But one of them is "to go to the gym" ;)

At the gym... Guess what, finally I registered for the gym near my university. It costs 160,000 Korean Won for 3 months period. Affordable to me! Today (Sunday February 12, 2012) is my first day ever at the gym. hehe... My first impression was "GREAT". I love the place. It is small but it has everything I need and it's not too crowded, for I don't like a place with many people. Therefore, I think I like it very much. Feeling then? umm... Yeah, "EXCITED" to see all the cool stuffs all in one place, "OPTIMISTIC" of what I'm going to do from now on, "ENERGETIC" for the workout, and "RELAXING" with workout. First day at the gym, I didn't want to run into serious workout yet. So, I just walked around to see the sport equipments. Then, got on the "Treadmill". I asked help from the gym instructor on how to use it. Then, I started the walk for 5 minutes. After that I ran with the speed of 8 for another 20 minutes. Sweating now... :) Then, I moved onto the "Exercise Bike", taking it for another 10 minutes with varying levels. I was trying to adjust the level just to get used to them. It was a great time though. First day, two gym equipments! I think it's enough for the beginner. :P Can't wait to go there again tomorrow and will try other equipments as well. ;) Sleepy now... Zzzzz Oh well, I forgot to mention about the blog title. It should be changed, right? Yeah, soon I'll do it. ;)

The Einstein Forum and the Daimler and Benz Foundation are offering a fellowship for outstanding young thinkers who wish to pursue a project in a different field from that of their previous research. The purpose of the fellowship is to support those who, in addition to producing extraordinary work in their area of specialization, are also open to other, interdisciplinary approaches – following the example set by Albert Einstein.
Applications for 2012 should include a CV, a two-page project proposal, and two letters of recommendation. All documents must be received by May 20, 2011.

Provision of the award

A stipend of EUR 10,000 and reimbursement of travel expenses.
Living accommodations for five to six months in the gardener's cottage of Einstein's own summerhouse in Caputh, Brandenburg, only a short distance away from the universities and academic institutions of Potsdam and Berlin.

The new NUS PhD-MBA (www.phd-mba.nus.edu.sg), Asia’s first PhD-MBA, aims to attract and train talented science and engineering students who have the potential to create and lead technology companies. The programme is jointly hosted by the NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering and the NUS Business School. Students develop their research skills by doing a PhD in any scientific or engineering discipline, choosing among a wide range of subjects, projects, departments and advisers. Concurrently they develop their business acumen by working on an MBA. Internships in technology companies provide practical technology business training.

Students in the NUS programme work on a PhD in science, engineering or medicine and an MBA concurrently. Successful applicants will be offered a scholarship covering the tuition fees for both the PhD and the MBA. They will also be offered a generous stipend for living expenses of S$ 3,200 per month (tax free), as well as allowances for books, a computer and for conferences. In the 1st year students typically do course work related to their PhD, completing 6-8 courses for 24 to 32 modular credits (MCs). They can choose among a wide variety of courses across the NUS campus with very few restrictions. In the 2nd year, students complete a first internship lasting around 3 months, for example in the summer between year 1 and year 2. Students also finish course work and sit their PhD Qualifying Examination, as well as selecting two advisers, one of whom should be from NGS, the other may be in any NUS department or school, or even external to NUS. Students then start their MBA in the 1st semster of the 3rd year of study. They do this as full time students in the NUS Business School, along with all other full-time MBA students. From the 2nd semster of the 3rd year onward, students continue their PhD research full-time and finish course work related to their MBA in part time mode. The course load for the MBA is somewhat reduced for PhD-MBA students, enabling them to finish the degree requirements in good time. A second internship is taken at any time during years 3 to 5. Upon successful defense of a thesis and the fullfillment of the requirements for the MBA, students are conferred a PhD and an MBA degree. Students may graduate with only a PhD, but not with only an MBA. The PhD-MBA is designed to take students between 4 and 5 years to complete.

A keen, open and independent mind, common sense, appreciation for the importance of science, technology and business, the ability to act and get things done alone and in a team are hallmarks of students suitable for the NUS PhD-MBA. Valuing the wide range of backgrounds of potential students, factors that the recruitment committee will weigh when making decisions on admissions into the NUS PhD-MBA are: academic records, standardized test scores, research experience, startup and industry experience, completed internships, interest in and involvement in entrepreneurship and business, as well as good English.

The prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme is open to excellent students from all countries. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies.

The Huygens Scholarship Programme is highly competitive. To illustrate this: for the 2011 scholarship round it is expected that out of approximately 1,700 applications only 150 candidates will be awarded a scholarship.

The most important criterion is that you have performed above average. Are you one of the top students of your institution and would you like to study in Holland? Then you may submit a scholarship application to Nuffic.

Provision of the award

A generous contribution towards tuition fees or towards bench fees for the PhD thesis;
A monthly allowance of € 1,380 (this includes a standard contribution towards healthcare insurance);
Visa fees (standard contribution);
A one-off payment towards international travel costs (standard contribution based on nationality);

The average value of scholarships awarded in 2010 was € 36,000.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for a scholarship you must be nominated by the Dutch host institution where you would like to pursue your studies. The Dutch institution can nominate you by providing you with a special Huygens nomination letter. Read more about nomination letter.
You are an excellent student: you have obtained excellent results in all your previous studies and you are at least in the top 5% of students in your study or research programme. Please show this in your application file by including, for example, grade lists or reference letters. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications which show that you are among the top 5%.
The Dutch study programme should be registered in CROHO, the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes. You can find this information in the Dutch nomination letter provided by the Dutch host institution.
You should be in the final phase of your bachelor’s studies, or studying towards a master’s degree in the Netherlands, and your study must be used to earn a degree at the Dutch institution.
Scholarships are only awarded for studies lasting at least 6 months, but no longer than 24 months. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications for 12 to 24 months.
Your studies or research in the Netherlands must constitute a deepening and broadening of your previous studies.
If you are already a graduate, you must have graduated less than one year ago.
It is possible to do research or practical training, but it must form part of your studies (a programme on the CROHO list), i.e. you must receive study credits for it. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications for study programmes.
At the start of the academic year (1 September) in which you study in the Netherlands, you must be no older than 35 years of age. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to a younger candidate.
You must have already attended a programme of education (e.g. high school or above) in a country outside the Netherlands.

Symantec will award Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowships to outstanding Ph.D. and M.S. students who meet the eligibility criteria listed below. A key goal of the program is to fund innovative research that has real-world value, in areas of Symantec's business interests in information security, availability, and integrity.

Fellowship participants also gain first hand research and development experience through guidance and mentorship from a top scientist of Symantec Research Labs during the fellowship period. Each participant is also encouraged to spend a summer working with their mentor at Symantec on a research project in their area of interest.

Provision of the award

In the US, the fellowship award will cover 100% of tuition and fees for the recipient's graduate school in the US. A stipend is provided to cover living expenses while in school.
In Europe, a stipend is provided to cover research and living expenses while in school.
Mentors from Symantec Research Labs are paired with award recipients. The mentor is a top researcher who can provide ongoing technical guidance on the recipient's research, during their graduate training as well as during summer internships at Symantec.
All recipients will be encouraged to take a salaried summer internship with Symantec Research Labs (Mountain View, CA, Culver City, CA, or Sophia Antipolis, France).
Each recipient will be given a laptop preloaded with Symantec software.
Fellowships are awarded to recipients for one academic year and may be extended for a second year, based on the award recipient's continued exceptional academic standing, progress and achievement. Any such extensions will be granted solely at Symantec's discretion.

Eligibility Criteria

Applying students must attend a U.S. or European university in a Ph.D. or Master’s program focused on technology research. Exceptional graduating undergraduate seniors may also apply and final award is contingent on their acceptance to a graduate program.
Preference will be given to students with a desire to work in an industrial research lab and those working on research projects likely to have real-world practical value to customers, in areas related to Symantec’s businesses of information security, availability, and integrity.
Recipients will also be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence and their academic progress to-date as evidenced by publications.
The scholarship awards will be made through the university and are not transferable to another academic institution.

The University of Hawai‘i (UH) and the East-West Center are separate organizations but maintain close institutional ties through a variety of programs, such as the Graduate Degree Fellowship Program.

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides master's and doctoral funding for graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the United States to participate in educational and research programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate study at the University of Hawai‘i. The fellowships cover the cost of tuition and fees, books, housing in an East-West Center dormitory, health insurance, and partial funding toward meals and incidental expenses. Funding for field study and conference presentations is offered on a competitive basis during the fellow's period of study.

Center fellowships are provided for degree study at the University of Hawai‘i and participation in the Center's international and intercultural programs. The Center and the University of Hawai‘i, located in a unique island setting with a distinctive multicultural heritage, offer premier resources for studies on Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S.

Degree fellows have opportunities to participate in graduate certificate programs offered in leadership studies, international intercultural studies, population studies and natural resource management that enhance their degree studies. Other opportunities include invited participation in the Center's research projects in several areas of international study including politics, governance and security; economics; environmental change; population and health; education; and Pacific islands development.

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship invites applications from:

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides funding toward:

General Requirements:

Applicants submit both the application for East-West Center Graduate Fellowship and the graduate admissions application to the University of Hawai‘i to the East-West Center Award Services Office. Applications must be postmarked by the November 1 deadline.
Applicants already enrolled as classified graduate students at the University of Hawai‘i submit only the East-West Center Graduate Fellowship application.
Required tests include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for applicants from non-English speaking countries, and the GRE or GMAT for all applicants as required by university departments.
Award recipients who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must meet exchange visitor (J-1 visa) requirements.

Degree Fellowship Requirements:

Beyond fulfilling degree requirements at the University of Hawai‘i, East-West Center students are required to take part in the Center's education program. These requirements include:

Core Program that meets weekly during the fall semester.
Spring Core Issues Course, which will consist of a series of presentations and small-group discussions.
Community Service. Degree Fellows are expected to devote 90 hours to community service during their award period.
Involvement in an EWC Research Project.
Interdisciplinary Certificate. Students not involved in an EWC research project must pursue one of several interdisciplinary certificates.
Language Requirement. Degree Fellows who are native speakers of English from USA, Australia or New Zealand must demonstrate proficiency in an Asian/Pacific language or complete four semesters of language coursework.

Guidelines:

Essays may be submitted by anyone up to 25 years old (as of June 30, 2010) in one of the following age categories:

Essays must be 800 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German; or 1600 characters or less in Japanese, typed or printed.

Awards: The following awards will be given in the Children category and Youth category respectively:

Black Screen Of Death & Blue Screen Of Death - BSOD

Have you ever experienced getting the Black/Blue Screen Of Death when using one of the Microsoft Windows versions? Well, BSOD is the term originally referred to the "Black Screen Of Death" which occurred in Microsoft Windows 3.0 according to Wallace B. McClure's blog. In a wikipedia page, the phenomenon presents in all versions of OS/2 Operating System.

If talking about where and when the term "BSOD" was coined, a page in hubpages stated that there are many. However, two different stories about this were mentioned. On the one hand, the term BSOD, which was used to refer to the "Black Screen Of Death", originated from the

Coca-Cola in Atlanta, GA in 1991 when the user would try to run WordPerfect and get the dreaded screen.

On the other hand, the term was coined sometimes during the late 1980s by the development teams at Lattice, Inc. during the pre-release development of the OS/2.

The screen would occur during porting of certain tools and when the NULL pointers were de-referenced in application. When describing the process and feedback to IBM Austin, the developers termed the stop screen as the "Blue Screen Of Death".

So, what actually is the BSOD if you get one in Microsoft Windows?
BSOD occurs when the system encounters the critical system error, and that the system must shut down to prevent damage. It is the result of various problems such as memory compatibility issues, CPU voltage issues, hard drive issues, heating graphic card issues, and much more.

Discovery of water on the moon

LCROSS, Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite, is the current NASA's mission to confirm the presence or absence of water ice in a permanently shadowed crater near a lunar polar region.

On June 18, 2009, LCROSS -- the companion mission to Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) -- was launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

On October 9, 2009, LCROSS's preliminary data indicates that the mission is successful in uncovering the water in permanently shadowed lunar crater. According to NASA, this new discovery opens the new chapter in our understanding of the moon. Now, we have to wait and see what happens next after the scientists analyze more on the data captured by LCROSS.

Medical Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship (Call for 2010-12 Fellowship)

The Humanities Research Center at Rice University will award one Postdoctoral Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Medical Humanities for a two-year appointment beginning July 1, 2010. The second year's appointment is contingent on successful review of the first year's performance. The Fellow will receive a stipend of $40,000 per year, plus benefits eligibility, as well as an allowance for research and relocation. In consultation with a faculty mentor, the Fellow will develop an introductory-level interdisciplinary medical humanities course that will be taught once each year of the fellowship. In addition to teaching, the Fellow will collaborate with the faculty mentor in to develop a year-long series of lunch lectures with invited outside speakers, to be held at Rice and at nearby medical institutions. The Fellow will be expected to make significant progress in research and to present that research at a lunch lecture. This fellowship will be awarded pending funding.

Eligibility:

The Fellowship is awarded to support a research project in the humanities. This includes, but is not limited to history, philosophy, languages, literature, linguistics, religious studies, art history and the arts. Proposals employing medical humanistic approaches are welcome from anthropology and other social sciences, natural sciences, music, architecture, and engineering.
Applicants should have received a PhD in 2007 or later, and before July 1, 2010.
Fellowship recipients cannot have accepted or currently hold a tenure-track position.

11 March 2009 is my honorable day for my Bachelor life. On the way to the stage, I was very excited plus getting extremely nervous ever. When on stage, I didn't even dare to look at the Prime Minister's face. What I did was to follow the procedure which I was told before getting on stage. Look at my face! I didn't even smile! OMG! That's stupid; the picture you rarely get in life, but you didn't smile, Leng Ieng. Of course, this is what nervous causes you. You can't do anything even smiling to get the best shot. It's never good if you are nervous. Be brave! Be courageous!

The 56th Anniversary of Cambodia Independence Day

November 9, 1953 is the Independence Day for Cambodia from France by former King Norodom Sihanouk. Since then, Cambodia annually celebrated its anniversary. Today, it's the 56th anniversary that Cambodia celebrates its Independence Day.

As usual, the celebration takes place at the Independence Monument located in Phnom Penh. This year, it's the same for the place but a bit different for the schedule from that of the past years because a part of the celebration is done on the 8th, one day before the Independence Day, from 3PM onward while the remaining is done on the 9th. According to the authority, this is done so that it will be easier for the King because each year it seemed to be very busy for the King to celebrate every part of the celebration all at once on one day.

Scholarship Awards within the Foreign Development Assistance Programme - offer for the academic year 2010/2011

The Government of the Czech Republic offers a number of scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance Programme in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.

These so called Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study:

1) in Bachelor/Master study programmes plus one-year preparatory course of the Czech language (which is combined with other field-specific training). Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools who can enrol only in study programmes in which they follow instruction in the Czech language. Depending on the subject area, applicants are normally required to take entrance examinations at the respective institution of higher education. The scholarship award is conditional upon a successful passing of entrance examinations;

2) in follow-up Master study programmes or Doctoral study programmes. Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from Bachelor or Master study programmes, respectively, who enrol in study programmes with instruction in the English language.

Scholarship applications together with the required attachments are to be submitted to the appropriate Czech Embassy in the applicant’s country before the deadline set by the Embassy so that the applicants’ dossiers reach the respective Czech authorities (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport) by 15 January each year.

Students who, at the time of application, stay in the Czech Republic may submit the respective documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department for Development Co-operation, by 31 December of the preceding year at the latest.

Foreign nationals who have been granted permanent residence in the Czech Republic are not eligible to apply for Government scholarships.

A male weedy sea dragon carries eggs on his tail at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Thursday, June 11, 2008. For only the third time ever in a U.S. aquarium, one of the endangered creatures is pregnant. The aquarium's sea dragon has about 70 fertilized eggs which look like small red grapes — attached to his tail. He is expected to give birth in early to mid-July, said Kerry Gladish, a biologist at the aquarium.

Sea dragons, sea horses and pipe fish are the only species where the male carries the eggs, Gladish said. Sea dragon pregnancies are rare because researchers don't know what gets them in the mood to mate.
